About Greg Jiritano - Bio

A native of Brooklyn, NY, Greg Jiritano started painting early on, with his artist uncle, Gerry Jiritano. A prolific period of early work was followed by attendance at Parson's School of Design in the Fine Arts Program.  His concurrent passion for music (he also started playing guitar at 8 years old) gave him a unique intertwining creative process.  He has written and recorded over 300 songs with international pop and rock groups and solo projects.  Since the 80's he has travelled the world widely on tour, all the while, making his art.

Jiritano has maintained his outsider status in the art world through many experimental musical projects (including The Ghost Orchestra, a collaboration with John Schumann Electronics, that featured an analogue stringed orchestra of 40 guitars) and vigilantly itinerant lifestyle.  When a friend discovered the art work in his home studio, she submitted it sucessfully to be shown at the Wooster Projects.  More recently, his mother sent a photo of a painting he had given her, answering an ad in the New York Times.  From this surreptitious entry, he was chosen for 2 years running, to be featured at the Verge Art Fair (Manhattan and Brooklyn.)  This website is the first public showing of his full body of work.

Influences include: Kandinky, Beethoven, the 2 Gorky's (Arshile and Maxim,) David Bowie, de Kooning, Bonnard, Pink Floyd, Pere Ubu (by Alfred Jarry and the punk band from Cleveland,) Jeff Beck, Bob Marley, Duchamp, and Klee.
